Collection: Ways of Knowing
This collection was created in collaboration with artist Meaghan Peters, in an effort to explore the difficult and ever-changing relationship between colonial and Indigenous worldviews and ways of knowing, guiding that conversation into a place of united progression.
Meaghan's bright, layered backgrounds represent the beautiful beadwork of her Metis culture. She then layered Indigenous land right acknowledgements in text form and waterway maps of Canada in this vibrant, organic, abstract background, speaking to her roots and the beauty and complexity of the land.
Katy completed the 4 pieces by painting animals native to Manitoba, in a modern realistic style. These were painted in grayscale representing the stark black and white documents and adherence to Eurocentric or colonial standards of land ownership.
The artists hope for this collection is to shine a spotlight on the growing consciousness of the relationship between their heritages historically and presently, to highlight that the ways of knowing are many and certainly not confined to 'legal' print, as well as to showcase colleagues and friends creating and moving forward together.
